- The Book of the Prince (Italian: Il Principe) is a study in political jurisprudence prepared by Niccolo Machiavelli in 1513 while he was in the village of Santanderia Barcusina, exiled after the return of the Medici family (1512) on charges of participating in the plot of Pier Paolo Boscoli against the Medici. Machiavelli dedicated this work to Lorenzo II de' Medici, son of Piero to II de' Medici, in hopes of restoring the position of Secretary of the Republic, and it was published in 1532 after his death. It is undoubtedly his most famous work, and the name "Machiavellian" and "Machiavellian" were derived from it.
